182 Greatest Copywriters and Copywriting Resources of the Internet Age

Here is my list of the best copywriters and copywriting resources. If you’re an aspiring copywriter, these are the people you should be following, learning and swiping from

182 best copywritersHere are the 3 main criteria for the people/resources you’ll find on this list…

1. They are specialized copywriters…

There are many marketers who are great copywriters, the list of marketers who can write good copy would be an absolutely huge list (and this list is big enough as it is). So I’ve narrowed it down to those who, for the most part, specialize in copy and conversion optimization. Perhaps they are for hire as a copywriter, have a blog about copywriting, have a newsletter about copywriting, have written a book about copywriting, have a specific course about copywriting, etc. They either write copy for a living or they teach it

2. These are modern day copywriters…

The list of great copywriters over the last 100 years would also make for a very big list. So the people on this list are modern day copywriters. Most are still alive but not all of them but their impact on the copywriting world was recent. I’ve decided to list copywriters making an impact since the year 2000 onwards (although many have been making an impact long before the year 2000 as well). I guess you could say this is a list of the best copywriters of the internet era.

Please don’t come at me with “What about Schwartz, Caples and Hopkins?!” Those guys were great, the pioneers of copy but they aren’t on this list. I’ll probably make a separate list of the old school copywriters in the future

3. They have taught me something useful…

This is my personal list. No special panel or committee decided these names, it’s my opinion. The only qualification is that they have impressed me and I have learned something from them  that I think was of value. I have been lucky enough to interview many of these great copywriters so I’ve learned from many of them one on one. I’ve also studied their books, blogs, courses and studied/swiped their copy and I find them worthy of being on the list

I know I will be missing people out. It’s not personal, it just means I somehow didn’t hear of them or I didn’t get a chance to study any of their work yet.

Also a lot of great copywriters don’t tout themselves as teachers but just stay quietly hidden, writing copy and the rest of the world don’t know about them. These best kept secrets may be great copywriters but I can’t list them if I don’t know who they are.

So if you should be on this list or you know someone who should be on this list, leave a comment below as to where I can find out more. If I think they are good, I’ll add them to the list

In no particular order, here is my big, fat list of the best copywriters and their materials…

Gary Halbert Bond Halbert Kevin HalbertThe Halbert Family – Made up of Gary Halbert, Bond Halbert & Kevin Halbert

Gary Halbert is arguably the greatest copywriter of the modern era, many of the copywriters on this list, credit the success of their careers to the guidance and mentoring given by this man. I think if a poll was conducted as to who the best copywriter of all time was, he may just win such a poll.

Gary passed away in 2007 but his legacy lives on. His website thegaryhalbertletter.com is still maintained by his sons Bond and Kevin, who have kept the family business going and are both A-class copywriters in their own right.

 P.S.

These guys don’t position themselves as “copywriters” but I couldn’t not include them on this list…

These people also absolutely rock at copywriting. The reason they aren’t on the above list is because I don’t see them as quote on quote “copywriters”. They don’t position themselves that way. The majority of their work stretches far beyond copywriting into a whole range of marketing and business strategies, of which copywriting is a small part. This means I can’t pin point to a course, book or website where you can find out about their copywriting resources, quite so easily.

However, this list felt a little wrong without including these guys because they sure as heck can write copy…

So to remedy that, my best marketers list is already in the works and you’ll find these guys featured more prominently on there…

Jay AbrahamJay Abraham

Best known for his strategy of preeminence, his many books and courses, etc. Jay is a master of marketing. Copywriting is of course a part of that.

You can see a portion of his “School of copywriting” talk on Youtube

Frank KernFrank Kern

Best known for his Mass Control course which took the IM world by storm in 2007. Frank’s persuasion, influence and marketing techniques certainly apply to copy but good luck trying to hire him to write you a sales letter.

Here’s a couple of free videos (parts 1& 2) on YouTube where he breaks down a high performing sales letter.

Kevin NationsKevin Nations

Kevin certainly hasn’t positioned himself as a copywriter but he is as good as anyone. He helps coaches to get paid what they are really worth. Over the last few months I’ve found myself glued to his updates and I think so has the rest our community. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a long form sales letter of his, he keeps it short and to the point, and when it comes to building up desire for his services, there’s no one better right now.

Perry Marshall Perry Marshall

Perry is known for his work with Google Adwords as well many other aspects of marketing. He is the creator of many products including Adwords Copywriting Express, Autoresponder Bootcamp & his Look Over the Shoulder Email Writing course

Here’s a video of Perry talking about using hype or over promising in copy.

Todd BrownTodd Brown

Todd is the go to guy for sales funnel optimization. Of course, a funnel is the ultimate conversion process, it’s a multi-step piece of copy in a way, and so direct response copywriting plays a huge role, every step of the way. He also covers the automated/technical side of the funnel sequence too, how to get the very best out of Infusionsoft etc. If you don’t read his blog and you’re not on his email list, you’re doing yourself a disservice.

My interview with Todd is due to be released shortly.

I Love Marketing – Joe Polish & Dean Jacksonjoe polish dean jackson

Together, Joe & Dean are the hosts of one of the Internets most popular marketing podcasts – I Love Marketing

They have interviewed top copywriters, conversion & marketing experts such as Jay Abraham, Jon Benson, Frank Kern, Eben Pagan, Brendon Burchard, Ryan Deiss, Dan Kennedy, Bill Glazer, Perry Marshall, Andy Jenkins and many more.

They are both great copywriters in their own right. The extent of their material does extend far beyond copyrighting and even beyond marketing into wider business topics too.

Joe can be found at piranha marketing, where you can download his free report – 7 steps to a successful ad.

Dean is the creator of the 60 minute naked truth sales letter formula which you can read about here on Michel Fortins blog.

Eben PaganEben Pagan

Eben Pagan is one of my favorite teachers of business and marketing strategies. His topics include leadership, personal productivity, positioning, business growth strategies, direct marketing and copywriting, so for that reason I haven’t included him in the copywriters list above but I couldn’t leave him out altogether. He is a master copywriter and you can see this in his own marketing. When he has a promotion going down, I’m reading and studying every word. His copywriting products include Print Persuasion and The Conversion Summit.

Ryan DeissRyan Deiss

Ryan’s products definitely go far beyond copywriting, he covers pretty much most internet marketing topics, anything to do with traffic or conversion really. When he and his partner Perry Belcher have a promotion happening I watch closely, I especially love their video sales letters. Their copywriting related products include 43 Split Tests, Video Sales Letter Formula and the annual must attend event… The Traffic and Conversion Summit

Marlon SandersMarlon Sanders

Marlon trains on all aspects of online marketing including copywriting. His copy related products include The Amazing Formula That Sell Products Like Crazy, Push Button Letters and How to Craft Killer Sales Copy. Here is a free video of him teaching his 12 step copywriting formula at a workshop.

David Frey David Frey

David blogs over at marketingblogger.com and he covers many different aspects of web marketing, copy being just one of them. He has an excellent copywriting interview series with 13 top copywriters, you can buy them at just $5 each. He is also well known for his 12 step fool proof sales letter formula.

Mark Joyner Mark Joyner

Mark is certainly not known so much for his copywriting but rather his Simpleology products. However I’m including him for his excellent copywriting book The Irresistible Offer: How to Sell Your Product or Service in 3 Seconds or Less

Bob SerlingBob Serling

Bob teaches the 7 steps to making more online sales, more often, naturally copywriting is a big part of that. His copy related products include his book Power Copywriting for the Internet & his copywriting interview product “How to write million dollar ads, sales letters and web marketing pieces” & Killer Copywriting Simplified.

Bill GlazerBill Glazer

Bill covers various aspects of marketing, copywriting and also public speaking but direct response is at the core of it all. He is the author of Outrageous Advertising That’s Outrageously Successful: Created for the 99% of Small Business Owners Who Are Dissatisfied with the Results They Get

Andre ChaperonAndre Chaperon

Andre teaches various aspects of online marketing but his course “Autoresponder Madness” is widely considered to be one of the very best email copywriting/marketing courses available

Mal EmeryMal Emery

Mal is a business and direct response marketing coach who has mentored many of Australia’s top copywriters. He is the creator of Street Smart Marketing.

Jeff Walker Jeff Walker

Jeff is the creator of the famed Product Launch Formula. Although perhaps not viewed as a copywriter in the traditional sense, you can’t have a super successful product launch with crap copy. Your sales letters, sales videos, emails and the pre-launch content has to be perfectly crafted and laced with direct response. Product launches are the ultimate way to get a huge boost in conversions for the short term and Jeff is the master of them.

  • Mike Lee

Jason Leister should be on this list. He actually writes copy for some of these guys.

    • josephbushnell

Thank you Mike! Some how he slipped under my radar. I’m just looking at his site now and you’re right, he’s looking like he should be on this list

  • Gonzalo Paternoster

You forgot legendary copywriter Ye Gyan from Cult of Copy.

    • josephbushnell

Hi Gonzalo, you know he actually came to my attention just recently (I saw a couple of his posts in COC) I may have to add him

  • yassin

I think you are missing rich schefren in the “non copy writers” category. Great list. Thanks

    • josephbushnell

You’re right Yassin, I love Rich too and he’s as good a marketer as they come, I just don’t know if he writes his own copy. I know Todd Brown was working for him a little while back, not sure what the arrangement is now. He’ll be on my top marketers list for certain. If I ever do a business consultants list, he’d be on that too

  • Mike Humphreys

Hi Joseph, thanks for including me on your list! I wanted to mention that the great Joe Robson passed away in 2010. Take care, Mike

    • josephbushnell

My pleasure Mike, keep up the good work 🙂 Thank you for telling me about Joe, he’s on the list but I did not know that he had passed away, I will make an edit

  • Thanks for putting this altogether, and privileged to be on the list! 🙂

3 other names you may want to consider…
-> Corey Rudl – sadly he died early in life, but, as you know, he was one of the founding father’s of IM.
-> John Fancher – one of the only copywriters Perry Marshall has hired (http://johnfancher.com)
-> Andre Chaperon – creator of Autoresponder Madness (http://autorespondermadness.com)

I’ve bookmarked this page and we’ll be comin back again and again. 😀

    Thanks again!
    Keith

    • josephbushnell

My pleasure Keith! Thanks for the suggestions too, I’ll add a couple of those to the list when I update it 🙂

  • Mary C.

You might want to mention which of these copywriters are under indictment or convicted for fraud … does cast a bit of a damper on their advice in approaching the market (Thinking of Perry Belcher in particular, forced into consulting as he’s not to write copy under the terms of his felony conviction, but he’s hardly alone … can read the highlights of the case here: http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2008/sep/30/internet-scammer-sentenced/
and court documents with the terms of his probation here: http://www.saltydroid.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Perrys-Problems.pdf)

    • josephbushnell

Mary, I do appreciate what you’re saying but for me it makes no difference on their ability to write or teach copy. I was well aware of Perry’s situation but I’m still a massive fan, If he made a mistake, a judge and jury has already taken care of it, I say forgive and forget. I’m also aware of a few others on the list who have had brushes with the law and the same applies to them as far as I’m concerned. Heck, Gary Halbert even wrote the Boron Letters whilst in prison but he made no secret of it and he came back fighting and impacted a lot of copywriters after his release. It’s my personal opinion and anyone is more than welcome to disagree

  • Gogo

You’ve got a lot of great names on here, many of whom I’m familiar with, but if you don’t have Sean D’Souza on your list, it is terribly incomplete. Not sure he positions himself as a copywriter, but unquestionably, he belongs here.

    • josephbushnell

I did consider Sean D’Souza and left him out for the reason you gave, he doesn’t call himself a copywriter. He’ll be on my next list for sure 😉

      • Jonathan Dune

NEXT LIST??? Again… that’s the problem with THIS list. It’s not inclusive. Sean D’Souza is also an amazing copywriter in New Zealand.

        • josephbushnell

Jonathan, my next list is not going to be a copywriting list, it will be for a different category within marketing. Any suggestions for copywriters will be added to this list ^^^

  • Anthony Policci

Here’s what I think is great and funny. There’s at least 6 folks on this list whose controls I’ve crushed, (according to the clients that hired me to write copy after they hired them). Apparently my strategy of being the “secret” weapon to the guru’s is working very well.

    • josephbushnell

Very cool Anthony, sounds like you should be on the list! Do you have a website, blog, product, book, you could point me towards? I’ll be updating this list soon

    • Jonathan Dune

Another copywriter that should be on your “list” Joey… Anthony Policci. And Joey … you will still miss many more copywriters who you don’t even know about. That’s just one problem with “lists”. You left out all those awesome copywriters who write amazing copy in other languages besides English!

      • josephbushnell

That’s very true Jonathan, I was always going to miss out some people as it was just my opinion but that’s why I have made this an open list and asked for the opinions and suggestions of others, that way I can update it and this list of resources can be even better 🙂

Good point about the non-English speaking copywriters too. Unfortunately I only speak English so I can’t see how great their stuff is in the same way. It takes nothing away from their copywriting skills though, it only reflects my ignorance of only knowing one language. That’s life!

        • Jonathan Dune

          G’day Joey –
After another look at your “list” I would recommend it be titled” “My List of…” . That little distinction in title/headline could alleviate problems with missing out on inclusion/mention.
          Cheers!
          ~Jonathan Dune

  • It’s a HUGE honor to be listed in company of this caliber. Thanks, Joey!

I’d second Jason Leister’s nomination — that guy’s scary smart.

And although they don’t position themselves as copywriters (both are conversion optimization geniuses), Bnonn Tennant and Peter Sandeen are worth checking out.

    • josephbushnell

Cheers Donnie, you know I’m a fan of yours! Thanks for the suggestions too!

  • What a list!

There are SO MANY people here that I am grateful to that have contributed to my evolution in my business life.

I love that you’ve got Robert Stover on this list. Forever and ever I’ve had the 90-120 minute interview that Shaune Clarke did with him sitting here in my office that I’ve wanted to take notes on but haven’t gotten around to it yet. Seeing him here reminds me that I need to get on it.

Trey Smith, Frank Kern’s cousin is another person Shaune Clarke interviewed because he was COMPLETELY FASCINATED with the skill at which he writes his auto-responder copy. My lazy ass DID manage to take notes on that one though and put em up on my nerd blog.

I know another person that myself, Shaune, and I imagine a ton of his fans are massively impressed with based on his ability to write compelling copy is Jason Moffatt. He’s an example of a person who has taken his copywriting skills and used them in non-salesletter ways on places like Facebook in order to get his fans highly engaged with him.

Now I have to say I’m kinda pissed at you Joseph. Why? Because you’ve just dumped like 150 names of people onto me that I now need to go import into Feedly! MOAR WORK!!! Hahaha

All kidding aside, I’m incredibly grateful to you for investing the time and effort that it took to compile this list. I know it wasn’t easy. And of course I’m grateful that you thought enough of what I’m doing on my little homestead here in this sprawling world wide web to list me among these 182 studs and studdettes.

Thank you on both counts Joseph. 🙂

    • josephbushnell

Thanks Lewis! I’ve not heard that Robert Stover/Shaune Clarke interview, I’ll have to see if I can find it. I agree about Jason Moffatt, I like his updates and they are indeed copywriting but in “social updates” format. There’s quite a few people like that, Kevin Nations is killing it with “facebook status” copywriting.

Sorry about the extra headache but I’m looking forward to seeing some notes on your site from these awesome copywriters!

      • Here are my notes for the interview Shaune Clarke did with Trey Smith…

        http://www.mynotetakingnerd.com/blog/marketing-notes-email-autoresponder-money/

Whew, this little gem had to be dusted off as it is from back in December of 2011! But after going through it again today I find that the advice Shaune pulled out of himself and from Trey is timeless and will serve anyone writing copy many, many, years from now.

Maybe someday I’ll hunker down and take notes on my Shaune Clarke training calls. (the ones Jason Moffatt actually participated in as a student). When I think of those 2-3 hour recordings for each call, I get a little scared like a wuss thinking about how much work it’d be to take notes on them!!!

I shouldn’t be scared, especially after taking 300 pages of notes on Eben Pagan’s 5 day Advanced Learning and Teaching Technologies course, but I am. In the end, it’d be so worth it though! It’s one of those cases where I’d hate taking the notes… but will love having taken them. Hahaha

While I’m here, I also wanted to drop one more name for you consideration – Ashley Ambirge. She’s doing some very awesome stuff. See for yourself here…

Hey Joe, just wanted to say hats off to you for putting together such a fantastic post! And many thanks for the inclusion. It’s a real honour to be included in the same list as so many copywriting legends. I know it’s impossible to include everyone but another name I thought I’d throw into the mix is Jeremy Reeves. He’s a top-class copywriter and conversion specialist. Check him out!

    All the best to ya,
    Nick

Hi Joey, I was wondering if you would update this list for 2015 and the links? Some of the links are now dead. That would be great. 🙂

    • josephbushnell

You’re absolutely right, I’ve been meaning to do it for a while but it never made the top of my to-do-list. I’ll get this page cleaned up asap
